Smitherman's busy man
Bruce Davis is a busy man. He is chair of the Toronto Public School Board, the biggest in the province. He is running for reelection as a trustee. He operates a bed & breakfast 270 kilometers away in Gananoque. And as of this week, he is manager of George Smitherman's front-running campaign for the Toronto mayoralty.

Chilling Afghan claims
Did Canadian troops use Afghanistan's notorious security services as "subcontractors for abuse and torture?" That's what the Commons committee on Afghanistan heard this week from Ahmadshah Malgarai, an Afghan-Canadian who worked as an interpreter in Kandahar.

Transit and tolls
Once considered political quicksand - too dangerous for even a single step into it - the idea of tolling existing roadways is developing considerable traction. Two high-profile mayors, Toronto's David Miller and Mississauga's Hazel McCallion, have both recently said road tolls will have to be discussed as a means of paying for essential transit expansion. And tolls have emerged as an early issue in Toronto's mayoral election.

Duceppe's hard slog
Once upon a time, a cross-Canada tour by a Quebec separatist could be counted on to attract frisky crowds and snarky media coverage. But 20 years after the death of the Meech Lake accord, it's harder to get a rise out of the ROC (as the Rest of Canada is called).

Grieving Poland shows resilience
The Archbishop of Warsaw, Kazimierz Nycz, voiced the anguish of a nation after Saturday's tragic air crash. "The flower of Poland's political, social, cultural life has been swept away" in an instant, he said. "Words are too poor and weak" to capture the loss.

Disabled voters snubbed
It is widely recognized that disabled Ontarians are poorly served when attempting to cast an election ballot. Barriers haven't yet been eliminated at many polling places, some of which feature multiple steps or doorways too narrow to accommodate a scooter.
