Taiwan's hot springs are popular with visitors
One of the many engaging aspects of Taipei is its excellent transportation system. The Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) system, which has nine lines and covers more than 100 kilometres, is fast and very clean - on one trip I witnessed an employee dusting the grab bars. Another plus: Signage and announcements are in English as well as Mandarin. So it's easy to venture to the Beitou Hot Springs area in the north of the city for a day trip, since they're not much more than half an hour from Taipei Main Station.

South Korean host of 2018 Winter Olympics has a long way to go
I'm peering over the edge of the Olympic ski-jump platform here, hundreds of feet above ground, shuddering at the track’s suicidal 45-degree descent. It’s the end of summer, and the tower affords a commanding view of the area known as Keunteo, or the Big Land Valley, with its lushly green fir and pine trees and neatly rowed potato fields framed by several distant mountain peaks.

Top humbug holidays for Christmas avoiders
Not everyone thinks this is the season to be jolly. There are some Scrooges out there who would rather all this ho-ho festive stuff would just disappear into a deep, dark cave. If you are one of those people, here are six places where you can take refuge:

There's no place like India

On the wings of the dragon
The Drukair Airbus glided smoothly to the runway of Guwahati, on the plains of Assam, India. My daughter, son-in-law and I were the only passengers to disembark along with an Indian couple - he reminded me of a young Omar Sharif and she was elegant in sari. The 60 or so other passengers went on to Paro in west Bhutan. Perhaps they had read the guide books warning to only visit Eastern Bhutan if you have a sense of humour and are prepared for a lack of hot water and western toilets or maybe because tourists could only exit Guwahati - not enter - until the last year or so.
